Yoga

The first week of summer break is coming to a close already. So many great things have happened this week, now granted they are quite small, but it isn't the size that matters right? For instance, I've made a commitment to myself to exercise (in the form of walking/jogging) 3-4 days a week and to take a yoga class one day a week. So far I've accomplished that goal this week and I'm very excited. I have always viewed exercise is something I need to do but don't want to do. Well I still kinda view it that way, but I'm realizing the importance of it. Say for instance like brushing your teeth. It isn't necessarily a ball of fun, but you do it because you know you need to, plus your breath smells better afterward! Same for exercising.

I mentioned yoga. Well let me tell you about the yoga experience I had on Thursday. I took an hour and fifteen minute yoga class with eight other people and a very pleasant instructor. Its the kind of yoga where you do it in a heated room, just fyi. I'm picturing going to this class and being surrounded by stay at home soccer moms (all of which drive BMWs and have 3 carat diamoned rings and have fake baked for their entire lives or have just gotten back from a three week vacay to Fiji) who have done yoga for years and years and are absolutely perfect at it. I also pictured the instructor "leading" the class by being up front and going through all the motions as we go through them so we know what the hell to do and how to do it. I also thought that ya the room will be hot and I'll probably sweat a good deal but nothing too terribly bad. And as far as me, well I feared showing up with the Wal-Mart special yoga mat and wearing the wrong attire for yoga. Well this was not how it was. First off, there were three men in this yoga class along with women of varying ages, ethnicities, and socio-economics statuses. Whoo I can breathe a sigh of relief. The stay at home hot ass soccer moms won't be there to look down their tanned noses at me and my teacher salary! My attire was not necessarily the picture perfect attire for yoga, but it was alright. I know what I need to do differently next time for sure. And my yoga mat didn't really look any different than the others (except I didn't put a towel over my yoga mat like everyone else did......more on that in a minute). So, all in all, things were looking pretty good at the beginning. Yes the room was a little warm, but nothing unbearable. I didn't feel like I was doing yoga in the Sahara Desert or anything. My instructor did not instruct us at the front of the class and show us how to do everything. She walked around the room assisting people and verbally telling us what poses to go into. I had to look at my neighbor to see what I was supposed to be doing. After about the first twenty minutes of class I realized why everyone had put a towel over their mat. Sweat! I'm not talking about a little persperation or glistening, I'm talking about water pouring off of my body from every possible sweat gland I possess. I looked down at one point and the tops of my feet were sweating. My forearms were even sweating. And then my mat started to get sweat on it from my sweating body. My hands and feet started to slide around which made some of the poses impossible to complete. Now I know why everyone had a towel over their mat! I will be bringing one next time for sure. At the end of the class I was so soaking wet that I really thought I had been outside walking in the rain or running through a sprinkler on a hot summer day. Neither of these had happened. It was my own sweat. And there was lots of it. I don't think I've sweat that much since I was doing gymnastics in the middle of summer in Amarillo. So, by the very end of the class (which I had no idea when that was because there were NO CLOCKS in the yoga room) I was in fact doing yoga in the Sahara Desert! I walked away drenched, a little sore, and feeling pretty damn good that I had actually survived it. This morning I am so incredibly sore. My abs are sore. I had no idea I had even worked my abs, but apparently I did. Every muscle in my body is sore, yet I still plan on going back and doing it all over again next week!

Maybe one of these days I will be a hardcore yoga guru. In the meantime, me and my Wal-Mart special yoga mat (with towel over it) will do as best we can.
